Wow – this must be so so tough for you all right now! Sending hugs!
With Sandy we had one night to decide on what we were to do…say goodbye or to amputate with chemo. I was besides myself & although finding this site after we had the amputation it was a true blessing to come across as I was desperate to know I had made the right decision as Sandy has arthritis too which they treated us for this initially also were drugs did not work & I pushed for a specialist to hand me this awful devastating news which I doubted my decision for days!!
However…you said that Bonz has life & energy…that’s what you MUST hold onto…we knew Sandy wasn’t ready to leave this world as she told us the same…”mummy I want to go home with you now please!!” So this I listened to this & although felt awful initially afterwards, I have now NO REGRETS at all. Sandy has taught me how resilient they can be & has adjusted just great!
Few ups & downs, initially a tough few days (more for me than her though) but now…no second guesses about the decision!!
They are more resilient than we give them credit for.
I learn so much from Sandy every day through this journey & she’s 12 years & 4months old.
If Bonz could talk, what would be the answer Bonz would give? That question helped me to make this awful decision a little easier.
We are all here so keep in touch & read the forum pages…a wealth of similar stories to learn from & most importantly to support your decision which only you knowing Bonz can make!
Good luck for 09th & sending virtual hugs!
Hi Dawnie,
Thank you so much for your post… I think he might tell me “Dad if you had to lose your leg to stay around and take care of me..wouldn’t you do it?” My biggest fear for him is is fear of Dr’s.. I know most dogs do not like them but his experiences with Dr’s have been soo traumatic with surgery to end his eyesight and him being attached by a dog we were fostering. I just hope I am not putting him through trauma he does not want. I do feel he has life though. Even on walks even in obvious pain from his leg he will pull you a mile. I just feel if we can get him out of pain and give him a great year or more with beach walks and car rides.
